Throughout history Satan has used his two-prong doctrine of deception: (1) apostasy – which is direct replacement of truth or (2) assimilation – confusion by mixing truth with half-truths. We will see the ease he enjoys by hijacking that which is true and replacing it with a counterfeit. Once Satan has legally accessed authority, by our choices, and has adjoined himself in and through our fallen natures in thought or deed, he then has the power to control and administer his kingdom upon the earth.
Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.” And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. From that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah, and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (that is the principal city). Gen 10:8-12
There is an enormous amount of commentary regarding Genesis chapter ten
and eleven. For our purposes, a favor has been done for you to simply summarize
the meat and the bones of that commentary. A mighty hunter before the Lord doesn’t sound too bad, but as the Jerusalem Targum puts it, “He was powerful in hunting and in wickedness before the Lord, for he was a hunter of the sons of men, and he said to them, ‘Depart from the judgment of the Lord, and adhere to the judgment of Nimrod.’ Therefore it is said: “As Nimrod the strong one, strong in hunting, strong in wickedness before the Lord.”
Our first intro into the man, Nimrod, is that he is a manly man. However, he was not your local NRA, Field and Stream card holder – this guy was ruthless! In fact, his ability to fight and rule with severe oppression was how he consolidated the first human kingdom on earth, his Euphrates valley city states, as detailed in the Scripture above. In many commentaries he is called the hunter of souls or Satan’s hunter of souls. He was the personification of pride – the self that proclaims that it exists separate from God.
He openly scoffed at the judgments of God. Rather than glorifying God, he sought to glorify himself, so much so, he demanded that others glorify him as well. His threats to those he overcame was something to the tune of, “Fear me, not God!” Mind you, all these folk he conquered were not too far removed from the Flood that God had used to destroy the world because of man’s wickedness. The populace being subjected to Nimrod’s tyranny was one thing, but for Nimrod to keep control of those he dominated, he needed to replace the people's belief in the Almighty. Satan through him, would use his doctrine of deception, through the direct route of apostasy, and if necessary, through assimilation to create a convoluted understanding of the Holy One.
As the commentary goes, he married a less than chaste gal named Semiramis. A wicked man marries a wicked woman and together they build and rule a wicked kingdom. They centralized their power from a city called Babel and called their kingdom Babylon. This will come as no surprise to us that Babel means confusion! Shock! And Babylon means confusion by mixing. Double shock! Nimrod built the famous Tower of Confusion (Babel) in the City of Confusion (Babel) in the Kingdom of Confusion by Mixing (Babylon) – and had the chutzpah to boldly demand that this confusion was clarity!
This will be Satan’s template going forward. To conquer en masse, he ruthlessly killed along the way but to rule and control his dominion, he needed buy-in, for people to choose his rule, so he began a counterfeit replacement story-line that is still prominent today. Nothing has changed in Satan’s tactics, nothing!
This is where both his political and religious campaigns take on Satan’s doctrine of deception, to replace the true with a counterfeit that is convenient and enticing. Now what campaign is going to use the phrase, “Join our confusion and live in our mixed-confused and dirty state.” Not too many, but there are many who will join slogans like, “Join our cultural, sexual and political diversities – merge with us as we emerge as masters with the universe!” Get the picture?
Nimrod’s campaign might have sounded something like this, “Come ye fellow Babylonians, build with us (Nimrod, Semiramis and his military) and we will build a tower that reaches beyond the flood waters of the judgments of God and together we will build into the heavens. There we will be our own gods, we will be the law-makers to enforce whatever we want. We will make a name for ourselves and be a great kingdom upon the earth – from man, by man, and for mankind! Join us today and leave the archaic God allegiance behind!”
