Much like Abraham commissioned Eliezer, the Lord commissioned Moses to go to Egypt and revealed His full intention and terms of redeeming Israel and in exchange, God would pay the redemptive Mohar price:
…but because the LORD loves you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore to your fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Deut 7:8
Moses relayed God’s terms to Israel, in which were also illustrated in the Passover meal (the Seder) by four cups called the four “I Will’s” of God:
The Cup of Sanctification: ...I am the LORD; I will bring you out
The Cup of Judgement: ...from under the burdens of the Egyptians...I will rescue you from their bondage,
The Cup of Redemption: ...and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments...
The Cup of Rejoicing: I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the LORD your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. Ex 6:6-8
It is beginning to sound a lot like the “I do’s” of a wedding! Have you ever considered that Israel had a choice? She did not have to leave Pharaoh's rule. It seems ridiculous to us that someone would choose bondage over the freedom to live in loving engagement with God Himself, yet so many of us do. We would rather choose the familiar bondage of our lower selves than the unfamiliar and uncharted freedoms in God. Nevertheless, the Scripture says, …the armies of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt, (Ex 12:41) not to mention a few God-fearing Egyptians (Gentiles) identified as a mixed multitude (Ex 12:38).
When John the Baptist saw Jesus and said,
“Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world,” (John 1:29),
Most of the souls that heard John could not imagine that Yah Himself was both Present, in manifest form, and that He would be the redeeming Mohar’s price for His Beloved.
Even though we walk in the 20/20 hindsight of this revelatory truth – still, it is beyond our comprehension – a truth that will never fade from the brilliance of its accosting light. Jesus is our Passover Lamb. It is the SUPREMACY OF HIS BLOOD which is over the entrance and dwelling place of our hearts.
…that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 2 Cor 5:19
The Father’s intentions and terms of agreement to pay the Mohar were fully communicated and for those who would agree to His terms, a new covenant would be made. Amazing! Then He graciously offered us His Covenant meal, and said,
…Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, Take, eat; this is My body. Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom. Matt 26:26-29
Remarkably, during the Passover meal before His crucifixion, Jesus did not drink the fourth cup, the Cup of Rejoicing. Why? Because it is the cup that the Bridegroom and Bride will drink together in their wedding chamber at the consummation of the ages – the Nissuin!
And remarkably, believers when celebrating the Passover to this day do not drink the Cup of Judgement. Why? Because Jesus the Messiah, took our Judgement upon Himself!
