Trumpets would be blown at the beginning of each month as well as an announcement of appointed times. There were three (3) primary trumps during the seven holy months that were distinguished:
The First Trumpet – blown on Shavuot (Pentecost) proclaiming God’s betrothal to Israel.
The Last Trumpet – blown on Yom Teruah (Rosh HaShanah) to announce the beginning of the end of the of the seven month cycle which climaxes in the High Holy Day of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement).
The Great Trumpet – which is the trump of Jubilee, is blown every 50th year on the Day of Atonement. Proclaiming either atonement for those who have repented and whose names are in the Book of Life or judgment for those who haven’t – it is the Great and horrible Day of the Lord. It is on Yom Kippur that the Trumpet of Jubilee is blown.
Scripture is peppered with mention of these three primary trumps and their reference to end-times, such as:
So it shall be in that day: the great trumpet will be blown; they will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria, and they who are outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem. Isaiah 27:13
There are also seven (7) trumpets mentioned in Revelation (chapters 8-11) which are all blown by angels prior to the release of predetermined judgments of God. Many arguments have commenced over which is which trump – are they separate from the three primary trumps, do they coincide, and etc – when trying to interpret these two fundamental end-time Scriptures,
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thes 4:16-18
...we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: 'Death is swallowed up in victory.' 1 Corinthians 15:51-54
