As mentioned, the Shiddukhin was the customary practice of the father to select a bride for his son. The father, or someone authorized on his behalf, would approach the bride and her family presenting his intentions.
In Genesis 24, Abraham commissioned his servant, Eliezer, to return to his country and family of origin to find a wife for Isaac. Upon Eliezer's arrival, gracious Providence would have it that the very first person he came across was Rebekah. In short, Eliezer presented his master’s intentions to Rebekah’s family and requested Rebekah’s hand in marriage to Isaac.
This particular historical account is laden with types and shadows. However, one of significant proportion is how Eliezer is a type and shadow of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is sent out to bring believers to faith in Jesus and be their Tutorial Guide until we are fully prepared as His Bride.
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. John 6:44
And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” John 6:65
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name… John 14:26
…according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: may grace and peace be multiplied to you. 1 Pet 1:2
Once the intentions and terms of the groom’s father were fully communicated to the family of the bride and found acceptable, the choice was given to the bride. If the bride accepted, then the Mohar (bridal price) would be paid by the bridegroom’s father or authorized representative, to the bride’s family.
In kind, God has chosen us and paid the Mohar in FULL!
Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Cor 6:19, 20
…knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold… 1 Pet 1:18
The Choice is Sealed with a Covenant Meal
Often the families would then sit down and share a covenant meal, expressing their agreement to the terms in a joyful celebration. This covenant meal is wonderful and profound imagery, shadowing the Jews eating the Passover before their exodus from Egypt, as well as Jesus eating the Passover at the Last Supper with His disciples before His death. However, there was just one astounding added revelation -- Jesus would be the Passover Lamb, paying the Mohar in full price with His own blood for His lovely bride.
