Lucifer’s identity was altered, way altered! He went from bearing the shining glory of God’s favor to slithering in the dark! God cursed the very nature that desires and chooses darkness over light – the serpentine, slanderous, slithering envy which became an adversary to the purposes of God!
The names given his cursed identity are dragon, which means the great serpent, devil, which means slanderer or false accuser, Father of Lies, which means father who spawns all lies and twister of truth (where we get the word wicked), and Satan, which means adversary to God’s purposes. One very telling name is the King of Babylon, the one who confuses.
Furthermore, the Scripture says a third of the angelic host followed Lucifer. What do you think he said to influence them? Scripture does not make us privy to angelic trash talk, but he more than likely influenced with the same line of thinking he enticed Woman with – after all, rebellion is simply continuous action of prideful disobedience. Perhaps his lingo sounded something like this,
“…Ya knowwww, we can have our own illustrious shining glory (enticement), God is just power-hungry (false accusation), and knows once you disobey Him, you’ll be free of His rule and you’ll be your own illustrious angel force (lie).” For those who chose to believe the lie, here is their eviction notice from heaven,
And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Rev 12:7-9
In God’s direct conversation with Job, we read in thirty four verses, rich in poetic form, God describing the fallen snarly dragon and named him Leviathan, which means sea monster. Sea, or any water, in Scripture is a metaphor for knowledge or information which directly or indirectly governs people, whether for good or evil, for an example,
For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. Hab 2:14
The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; the wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook. Prov 18:4
So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood. Rev 12:15
The root word for Leviathan is lavah, which means to join oneself to another. So in the usual pictorial prophetic language of Scripture, the descriptive imagery might read something like this, …the serpent who joins himself through knowledge and information that directly or indirectly governs the peoples... Furthermore, the Lord decreed through the prophet Isaiah the defeat of Leviathan at the end of days,
In that day the Lord with His severe sword, great and strong, will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan that twisted serpent; and He will slay the serpent that is in the sea. Is 27:1
Remember, in Section One, we understood that the root word for knowledge, yada, means to become one with. The desire to glorify God in accordance with His Word is our highest, most pristine state of being. However, the inversion or fallen desire to glorify is what the Bible calls the pride of life. When we are tempted with knowledge or information that separates us from God and His truth as our exclusive Creator, be very careful, a big gnarly sea monster is flirting with our desire so he can glorify himself, and his rebellion, through our own vanity! Pride is not a desired realm!
He (Leviathan) beholds every high thing; he is king over all the children of pride.” Job 41:34
Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Prov 16:18
Mental exile is when we, or the world around us, exists in a sea of knowledge where the glory of God has been concealed. And for those who willingly choose or promote that concealment, God allows them to exist in the delusion of their imagination, as written in Luke 1:51,
He (God) has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
Let’s go further in understanding Satan’s why (motive and intent) and how (strategies and tactics).
